Omega-3 supplements can benefit children with high cholesterol

A new study found that children who live with high cholesterol can benefit from an omega-3 supplement. The health of our children is a priority for every parent. However, some conditions and diseases may be beyond your control. There are conditions a child can be genetically predisposed to, and all mom and dad can do is follow advice from the medical community. The medical community gets its information from studies that are being conducted continuously to find out how to treat (and sometimes cure) certain diseases.

According to Medical Xpress, there is evidence that omega-3s may be beneficial for children with high cholesterol. Since the foods that naturally contain this may not always be appetizing for young children, they can benefit from a supplement.

The research was conducted by the Uniformed University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. They will present their research results at the annual meeting of the APA. It was found that previous studies had shown that these supplements were directly linked to a lower risk of coronary artery disease. Knowing that this is the case in children with high cholesterol, interventions need to be carried out.

This treatment must begin in childhood in order to protect them in old age. The researchers also said this is incredibly important, knowing that the rate of childhood obesity is increasing in the United States. To complete the study, the team looked at children between the ages of 9 and 16, all of whom had a history of high blood cholesterol. They followed a strict diet for six weeks and another 6 weeks of the same diet with a supplement.

Their results showed that this successfully altered the blood profile in children at higher risk for heart disease. Omega-3 is found in many fatty fish, according to Very Well Health. Items like tuna, salmon, and halibut. It’s also found in walnuts and almonds. However, taking a supplement can be the best way to ensure that your child is getting the nutrients they need. If mom thinks this is something that will benefit her child, it is always a good idea to speak to her child’s doctor before starting any supplement.
