If you’re looking for a Spectrum fish oil review, you’ve come to the right place. There are dozens of
supplements available in the market which can give you the much needed Omega 3 fatty acids – DHA and EPA. Why should or shouldn’t one choose Spectrum? Let’s find out.
Product Range
Let’s begin this Spectrum fish oil review by seeing what all kinds of fish oil capsules are available under this brand.
Their product range is divided into two main categories -
* Cod Liver oil
* Traditional fish oil
They have couple of varieties of the cod liver oil and three of the traditional oil. While this may seem to be a good thing at first glance, the thing is that Cod liver oil is anyway not really a recommended form of fish oil. Jut like in humans, a fish’s liver is the organ that filters out impurities from the blood. Which means if oil is extracted from the liver, it would tend to have higher levels of contaminants than the oil that is derived from the other tissue of the fish. You would be much better off avoiding cod liver oil altogether, irrespective of the brand.
Omega 3 Content
Spectrum fish oil fares well on this criterion. All their products deliver the recommended dosage of 250mg DHA and 100mg EPA fats in a day’s serving. Do note here that this is the optimal level of omega 3 you need to take, increasing this will not automatically mean you get more benefits. Just keep around these levels and you’re good.
Source of the oil
This supplement range sources its oil from either the cod, or from small fish like anchovies, mackerel and sardines. This is a good thing as smaller fish contain less contaminants ingested from the oceans, as compared to bigger fish like the salmon.
In fact, you can do even better by looking for a supplement that contains a mix of tuna and hoki oil. This combination delivers a unique synergistic value that makes it much more beneficial than traditional fish oils. We’ll see shortly which omega 3 fish oil supplement can provide this combination to us.
Purity of the oil
This is a critical point. If the oil hasn’t been properly purified, it can contain impurities like Lead, Mercury and PCBs inside. While this supplement does say their oil is purified using Molecular Distillation (a highly effective purification technique), they do not provide any facts or figures as to which purification standards they follow and what are the levels of contaminants one can expect their oil to contain. You won’t find any Spectrum fish oil reviews talking about this.
A better option here is the supplement produced by Xtend Life. It contains the unique mix of hoki and tuna oil which we had talked about above. It also follows rigorous purification standards, the details of which are openly available on their website.
Even if you don’t buy anything, I’d highly recommend going over to their website and going through all the great information they provide about omega 3 and choosing a good supplement. It’s a good read and you’ll be in a much better position to make an educated decision, be it Spectrum fish oil or Xtend Life.
