It seems like every time you turn your head, there is a new health benefit being talked about that a fish oil 1000mg dosage can provide. There have been numerous studies that have established the benefits of fish oil, and even the AHA (American Heart Association) now recommends the consumption of fish or its oil on a regular basis because of its benefits to the heart.
But the question is – how much oil is enough for providing these benefits? Is fish oil 1000mg taken on a daily basis enough?
100mg (1 gram) is just a general rule of thumb. Instead, a regular intake of 1000mg Omega 3 fatty acids would be much more beneficial. It’s these omega 3 fats like DHA and EPA that really are responsible for the amazing benefits to your heart, brain, eyes, joints, and even your skin; that fish oil can provide.
A high potency fish oil supplement would deliver around 2000mg oil in a day’s serving, out of which at least 1000mg would be omega 3 fatty acids. Now, the ratio of DHA to EPA is important too.
The old school of thought considered EPA to be the more important omega 3 of the two. That’s the reason most supplements contained EPA as the dominant ingredient till some time back. However, latest findings have made it clear that it’s DHA that’s the more beneficial omega 3.
Did you know that 60% of your brain is made up of omega 3 fats, and more than half of that is DHA? This is why taking a DHA rich oil can improve your memory and cognitive skills, provide protection against Alzheimer’s disease and help relieve anxiety and depression. Even the retina in your eyes is 60% DHA, which explains why taking a DHA oil helps prevent the onset of AMD (Acute Macular Degeneration) and keeps your vision clear and sharp.
A good proportion to look for is to have around 600+mg DHA and 250 +mg EPA in a day’s dosage of your oil. This would provide a good balance of both the fats to your body. However, do note that for specific health conditions, the dosage would be much higher than the ones we have talked about.
So if you’re looking to reduce triglycerides, a higher intake of 2-4 grams (2000-4000 mg) daily would be more appropriate. For Rheumatoid Arthritis also a higher dosage has been found helpful. A study done by the Harvard School of Public Health also found that omega 3 fats DHA and EPA helped reduced blood pressure in hypertensive patients at a dosage of around 4g/day. Of course, do consult your physician before you start any high dosage of fish oil.
Now, there are a couple of other things too that you need to take into consideration before buying a high potency fish oil 1000mg supplement –
Number one – Make sure the oil has been properly purified. Molecular Distillation is the preferred purification mechanism as it’s highly effective in removing all contaminants like Mercury, Dioxins and PCBs from the oil and is also able to concentrate it to a high degree.
Two – Make sure the oil you are taking comes in a soft gel format instead of an enteric coating. This allows the oil to be released in your stomach and is good for maximum absorption.
Just keep these checks in mind before choosing your fish oil 1000mg supplement and you can then rest easy knowing you have made the best choice for your health.
