Kirkland Fish Oil Concentrate – Is It Really The Best Choice For You?

If you are out there in the market looking for a quality fish oil supplement, then Kirkland fish oil is one option you must surely have come across.

The question is – how does Kirkland fish oil fare against the other supplements available?

To be able to find this out, a little background information is in order.

kirkland fish oil concentrateNow, the one basic reason why fish oil is considered to be good for our health, is the presence of Omega 3 fatty acids in it. These fatty acids are what’re responsible for all the heath benefits associated with the oil – an optimized brain, a heart running smoothly without problems, smoother movements in joints, reduced risk of cancer – all this is possible because of these fatty acids.

So this is the most important thing to check when choosing an Omega 3 supplement – How much DHA and EPA fatty acids does it contain?

Other things to look for include the purity of the oil and its cost effectiveness.

Checking for these three things will help you get the maximum health benefits in the most effective manner.

The total oil delivered in one dosage of this supplement is 1000 mg, which is a decent figure when compared to other choices in the market. However, the product details mentioned on the Costco website only mention that 300 mg of this dosage would be EPA/DHA fatty acids.

No break up is given as to exactly how much DHA and EPA you would be getting in one dose. And to be frank, 300 mg Omega 3 is a bit on the lower side.

You should at least be getting 500 mg Omega 3 fats per dose from your supplement, to get the best results. Also important to note is, DHA should be the primary component of your oil, with EPA being the second most dominant one.

A good supplement will contain at least 250 mg of DHA per dosage, and 100 mg of EPA. There is one supplement from a New Zealand company – Xtend Life – that holds good on this parameter.

Next, the purity of the oil is also important. Fish oil can contain a lot of contaminants ingested by the fish from the polluted ocean waters. If the oil is not properly refined, then these dangerous contaminants like lead, mercury and PCBs will make their way into your body and cause serious health problems.

It’s good to see that Kirkland fish oil concentrate has been purified thoroughly by the process of Molecular Distillation – a complex and expensive process only a few good companies bother to use for purifying their oil. Xtend Life is also one of them, and in fact purifies its oil to a much higher standard than what most standards like IFOS mandate.

Finally – the price. Kirkland fish oil is available in a very wide range – right from $9 to $50 – which raises a red flag in my opinion. Why is there so much variation in its price?

It does sound a bit fishy – no pun intended.

Even if you buy this oil at the lower price point, it may cost you less, but you won’t get much health benefits out of it either.

My suggestion – go check out what Xtend Life has to offer in their fish oil over Kirkland fish oil. The Omega 3 quantity it provides is enough, the oil is pure, and costs less than $20 for a month’s supply.

What more could you ask for?
